Our Story From The Beginning

Hello and a very warm welcome, my name is Nathan Steans a proud third-generation professional painter and decorator in my family and long time resident of Melton Mowbray.

Painting and decorating runs deep in our family’s history, my grandfather and father both enjoyed long and successful careers in the trade, dedicating their lives to providing high-quality service to their clients. Back in their day, painting was a true craft. They used techniques and tools available at the time, including large brushes, as rollers and sprayers were not yet in use. My grandfather and father hand-mixed paints and colours, even when they contained lead, and their work was physically demanding. The popular trends of that era included woodchip wallpaper and vibrant shades of green, brown, and blue.

My father retired from the trade in 2019, though I still bring him out of retirement to help me on a few jobs each year. It’s always a pleasure to work alongside him, and it’s a testament to the strong legacy he’s left.

My journey in painting and decorating began at a young age. My father, who ran his own business from his early twenties, built up a solid customer base. During school holidays, I would join him on internal and external jobs, learning the essential skills of the trade. He taught me the importance of preparation, from sheeting up to protecting carpets, furniture, and floors. I spent over a year honing these skills before I even picked up a paintbrush. My father drilled into me that solid preparation—sanding woodwork, filling, and priming—is the foundation of a successful job. It’s said that 70% of the work is in the preparation, and I’ve carried that lesson with me throughout my career.

At 16, I decided to pursue the trade further and left school to enrol in a highly regarded painting and decorating course at Southfields College in Leicester. There, I excelled both practically and theoretically, earning a City & Guilds and NVQ qualification. I was honoured to receive the “Best Painter and Decorator of the Class” award, recognising my strong work ethic, dedication to quality, and professional attitude. The award, presented by Mr. David Wilson, founder of David Wilson Homes, included a shield and £100 worth of tools. This achievement marked a significant early milestone in my painting career and has remains a proud moment in my professional journey.

After completing my qualifications, I partnered with my father to expand our family business, which grew into a successful, locally respected company. We began taking on larger commercial projects across the UK, as well as international work in Ireland and Scotland. We had the privilege of redecorating iconic locations such as Goldsmiths Jewellers, Harrods of London, Nike stores, restaurants like Prezzo Italian, and numerous pubs, schools, factories, offices, and hotels. We spent over 20 years working on both private homes and commercial properties, earning a strong reputation for high-quality work.

Eventually, I decided to strike out on my own and focus on delivering personal, high-quality service for local customers. This is when I founded Superior Property Maintenance & Improvements. My aim is to transform homes and businesses in my local community with the same level of care and craftsmanship that I’ve learned throughout my career.

Today, my younger brother continues the family legacy, running the commercial side of the business, keeping the tradition alive for future generations.
