Why Preparation is Everything: Bedroom Redecoration in Somerby
Most decorators show you the finished room. This case study shows you everything that came before it — because without the right preparation, no paint finish in the world will look good for long.
Somerby, Leicestershire | Interior Home Painting Project April 2026
When Nathan arrived at this property in Somerby, the bedroom surfaces were in a poor state. Long, wide cracks ran across both the ceiling and walls — the kind of damage that can’t be hidden with a coat of paint, no matter how good the paint is
Preparation makes or breaks a decorating job. A fresh coat of paint can make a room look great on day one. But if the surface underneath hasn’t been properly prepared, cracks reappear, edges lift and finishes peel, often within months. This is why Nathan dedicates as much time as needed to preparation, even when it’s the least glamorous part of the job
At this Somerby property, the preparation stage took longer than the decorating itself. That’s not unusual with older properties — and it’s exactly what separates a finish that lasts years from one that starts failing within months.

How We Did It - The Process
“It’s very important to tell the story of how important preparation is. It’s what creates that high-quality finish and makes the job last.”
— Nathan Steans, Superior Property Maintenance & Improvements
Full surface assessment
Before any work began, Nathan assessed the full extent of the cracking across ceiling and walls. Understanding the depth and cause of cracks is essential; surface cracks are treated differently to structural movement cracks, and misidentifying them leads to the same damage returning.
Crack filling — multiple applications
All cracks were opened up slightly, cleaned out and filled. On surfaces this poor, a single fill isn’t enough — filler shrinks as it dries, so multiple passes are needed to bring everything truly flush. Each coat was allowed to fully cure before the next.
Sanding with electric dustless extraction
Once filled and cured, surfaces were sanded back using an electric sander with a dustless extraction system. This keeps fine dust out of the air and off every surface in the room (particularly important in a bedroom) and leaves a perfectly smooth key for paint to bond to.
Priming prepared surfaces
Filled and sanded areas were primed before painting. Primer seals the surface, prevents patchy absorption in the topcoat and ensures an even, consistent finish across old and newly-filled surfaces alike.
Redecoration — ceiling, walls & woodwork
With the surfaces fully prepared, the redecoration could begin, and the results speak for themselves. The time invested in preparation meant the paint went on evenly, covered completely and delivered the high-quality finish the client expected.
Final Result
Now that the work is finished, the room looks completely refreshed. The space is brighter, cleaner and more inviting – the client was really pleased.
